Gifts from the Sea – The Bahamas Stormy weather is a nuisance for some but for others it is an opportunity to receive gifts from the sea! Shells large and small, delicate and flat, can be found in the seaweed line than inevitably forms on the beautiful beaches of the Bahamas, where the wave line ends the attempt to invade land. For driftwood collectors this season is utopia! Sea glass is also a well sought after treasure, and wading through the little rock pools can be very rewarding for crafters and jewelry makers. Many houses and patios in the Bahamas are decorated with beauty collected from our surroundings. Some creative Bahamians make their living crafting found objects into furniture, art and useable objects such as salad bowls and even tables.…

Want the hotel experience, but not the price tag? Ask about a day or evening pass. All inclusive hotels such as Breezes and Sandals provide both day and evening passes, and Atlantis does a day pass for use of ‘the biggest water park in the Caribbean’. All inclusive day passes mean you can lounge around the pool, enjoy a beverage or four, eat lunch from one of several restaurants or cafes on property, use the (non motorized) water sports and game rooms. The evening pass for these resorts caters to dining, cocktails, piano bars, pool rooms, adult games and dancing! Atlantis welcomes non-guests to use the bars, restaurants, and nightclubs, and to attend concerts in the evening. At family friendly Atlantis the day pass gives access to the vast array of…

So you have never been to a quiet Bahamian “Out Island?” Get the ‘out island experience’ right here on the island of New Providence! (Nassau is the old town, not the name of the island in case you did not know.) Take a leisurely drive past the airport to Coral Harbour, a lovely little residential fishing village on the south west coast. Along the ‘beach road’ you will find the Sand Bar (shhh, it’s a well-kept secret). Drinks are cheap like the plastic patio furniture, and the food is strictly “island style”. A Bahamian breakfast favorite is stew fish (savory tomato gravy that smothers fried fish, onion and a few pieces of potato) served with grits or ‘Johnny cake’. If you are calorie conscious try the Boil Fish instead. Once you try that you’re hooked…

And he is usually riding a bike and wearing a tam (a cloth wrapped around their head, or a crocheted hat, to protect their dreadlocks). Whether it’s in the car park, at the fundraiser, outside a bar, in the bar, at the Fish Fry, the cricket, at the hairdresser or by the stop light, he’s there! Peeeeanuts! Irie nuts, they shout out loud, and a quick nod gets you a brown paper bag of roasted peanuts for only $1! They are fresh roasted in the shell by Rastas, and so a cheap healthy snack with a blessing from Jah!

Sometimes you just want to go back to your youth and cruise the beach road with the radio blaring and all the windows down. Take your dog, take your friend or sing along to the radio alone and uninhibited! West Bay St is the “cruising” road for you. West Bay St curves around the north west coast of Nassau, seldom interrupted by buildings, it literally “hugs” the coast. Most of this coast is beautiful beach. Whether you stop for a walk, a stretch, or to meditate to the music of the waves, you will enjoy this time to recalibrate. Stop for a conch salad at Gambier Village, a beer by Nesbitt’s Bar (and pool hall), or a fresh fruit daiquiri with Andy at The Daiquiri Shack, located in front of the Caves. West is also the place to witness beautiful sunsets…
